Science communication is a sub-field of media and communications research, that seeks to explore and theorise the multiple connections between science, society and communications technologies.
The focus of the Centre is to study the role of communications in connecting scientific research with the broader project of social justice and engaged publics, and to action-research best practice in communications modalities that serve the advancement of scientific knowledge.
The DSTI-NRF South African Research Chair in Science Communication, housed within the Centre, was allocated to Stellenbosch University in 2015 and was hosted at CREST until 2022. The Chair is now hosted at the Department of Journalism.
In addition to an active and productive research programme the Centre can support postgraduate students specialising in science communication through NRF-linked studentships. Through collaborations, we are developing new teaching programmes.
